Improving Early Maternal Care: Focus on First Trimester Registration in Mawthadraishan

Recent findings from a field visit under the Human Development Leadership Programme (HDLP) in Mawthadraishan Block revealed that over 50% of mothers were not registered during the first trimester of their pregnancy. This delay limits timely access to antenatal care and essential health services in the early, most critical stages of pregnancy.

The gap appears to stem from a combination of factors, including limited awareness, cultural hesitations, and logistical challenges in accessing health facilities. Encouragingly, community members showed openness to early registration when the benefits were explained, indicating strong potential for progress.

In response, the district team is planning a set of targeted interventions including community-level sensitisation, home visits by ASHAs, and improved follow-up mechanisms at the village level. Emphasis will be placed on early engagement with expectant mothers through Anganwadi Centres and health sub-centres.

With strengthened outreach and consistent messaging, Mawthadraishan can make significant strides in ensuring healthier pregnancies, safer deliveries, and better outcomes for mothers and children.
