In the serene yet determined village of Shnong Nongpedeng, in Tynring, East Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya, a remarkable story of resilience and hope is unfolding. This is the story of Kong Alina Kharumnuid — a woman who, despite facing life’s toughest challenges, is now stepping into a future filled with promise and self-reliance.
Overcoming Adversity
Kong Alina’s life has been anything but easy. A widow and a mother, she has shouldered the immense responsibility of caring for her family. One of the most heartbreaking moments in her journey came when her 17-year-old daughter had to drop out of school after Class 9 due to financial hardships. While she receives occasional support under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), sustainable opportunities for income remained out of reach — until now.
The Turning Point: SHG Intervention

Thanks to the persistent efforts of the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS) and the dedicated Active Women and BC cadres, Kong Alina was identified, counselled, and eventually enrolled in a Self-Help Group (SHG). This pivotal moment marked a turning point in her life. The SHG framework is designed to provide financial assistance and foster skill development, build confidence, and create a community where women uplift one another.
Kong Alina is now a proud member of Maitshaphrang SHG, operating under Kyntiewlang VO in Tynring Village. Founded on 16th September 2020, this group began with 10 women committed to supporting each other through weekly savings, skill-sharing, and small loans. Each member contributes ₹20 per week to the collective fund, which is then lent out as savings, revolving funds (RF), community investment funds (CIF), and bank loans.
On March 13, 2025, Kong Alina officially joined this inspiring collective, becoming its 11th member. For her, this is more than just membership—it’s an entry into a network of women determined to rewrite their futures.
Joining an SHG opens multiple doors. For Kong Alina, it means access to microloans, essential skills training, and guidance from fellow members who understand her struggles. It’s about more than just financial independence; it’s about regaining confidence and reclaiming her role as a provider and a role model for her family.
With the support of Maitshaphrang SHG, Kong Alina now envisions a future where she can secure a steady livelihood, ensure her daughter’s education resumes, and break free from the cycle of economic vulnerability. Her journey is a testament to the transformative power of SHGs — where unity, perseverance, and collective strength empower women to rise above adversity.
Empowering Women, Building Communities
Kong Alina’s story reflects the broader mission of MSRLS — to enable women in Meghalaya to become self-reliant through collective action. SHGs not only provide financial stability but also foster a sense of community, resilience, and shared purpose.
As we celebrate Kong Alina’s courage and determination, we also acknowledge the unwavering support of the cadres and community leaders who made this transformation possible. Each woman’s success story strengthens the foundation of a more inclusive, equitable, and empowered society.
Kong Alina’s journey has just begun, but her spirit embodies a powerful message — that resilience, when paired with the right support, can pave the way to an empowered, self-sustained life.
